Energy-efficient intrusion detection in mobile ad-hoc networks

Research Abstract

Mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) are a special kind of ad-hoc networks without any infrastructure, in which nodes are connected to each other with wireless links. Due to their nature, these networks are targeted by various types of attack that try to disrupt the communication between the network nodes. A trust management mechanism in addition to the standard message authentication systems in the SAODV protocol was developed in order to discover paths that avoid malicious nodes inside the network. An estimation of the energy consumption introduced by the trust management was done, since the power consumption of the nodes is an important matter due to their limited power source available coming from batteries, so a system that does not require too much energy is needed. These results were taken into account to define and develop a monitoring probability function, with the main aim of monitoring activity reduction. It led to the reduction of energy consumption, without affecting the accuracy and the quickness of the intrusion detection system.
