Corso di dottorato “Cloud computing and virtualized data centers” Proff. C.Mastroianni, D. Laganà – Inizio 24.09.2018

Abstract
The course will introduce the technologies adopted by modern Cloud solutions, specifically: virtualization, orchestration of virtual machines, workload redistribution in multi-cloud environment, definition and management of light virtual machines, i.e., containers. The course will describe innovative techniques, based on recent research in the fields of bio-inspired algorithms and swarm intelligence, which are adopted to optimize the allocation and scheduling of virtual machines in data centers. The use of mathematical models and formalisms will be illustrated with concrete examples. Moreover, the course will discuss the results obtained in real use cases, both in a single and in a multi-cloud environment, and the benefits achieved in terms of energy saving, reduction of carbon footprint, load balancing, performance improvement, and cost reduction.

Short Bio of Lecturers:

Carlo Mastroianni received the Laurea degree and the PhD degree in computer engineering from the University of Calabria, Italy, in 1995 and 1999, respectively. He is a Senior Researcher at the Institute of High Performance Computing and Networking of the Italian National Research Council, ICAR-CNR, in Cosenza, Italy, where he works since 2002. Previously, he worked at the Computer Department of the Prime Minister Office, in Rome. He co-authored more than 100 papers published in international journals, among which IEEE/ACM TON, IEEE TCC, ITTT TGCN, IEEE TEVC and ACM TAAS, and conference proceedings. He edited special issues for the journals IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing, Future Generation Computer Systems, Journal of Network and Computer Applications, Computer Networks, Multiagent and Grid Systems. His areas of interest include cloud computing, urban computing, bio-inspired algorithms, multi-agent systems, peer-to-peer networks. Demetrio Laganà is the solution architect of Eco4Cloud company (http://www.eco4cloud.com), a spinoff from CNR and the University of Calabria, where he started working in 2013. He has extensive experience with virtualization technologies such as VMWare/AWS, software modelling, architecture and DB design, and Java programming. He has active scientific collaborations with the Italian National Research Council (ICAR-CNR) and the “Politecnico di Torino”, and works on Cloud Computing and complex data center environments.
